With another urgent climate report shouting in capitals that we need to change up our habits like yesterday in order to curb a major planetary disaster, Earth Day (Apr 22) feels more important than ever. Granted, it may feel like much is out of our hands, but there’s still plenty we can do to educate ourselves and others, plus small steps we can take to preserve the majesty of this big blue marble we call home. We’ve rounded up the best ways to celebrate the environmentally conscious holiday, from Celebrate Earth Day in Multnomah Village to Every Day is Earth Day. SATURDAY, APRIL 16

Earth Day at The Oregon Garden Past Event List
In honor of Earth Day, the Oregon Garden will offer free admission to their 80-acre property. Guests are invited to take a guided tour of their rediscovery forest, ride the garden's new tram, browse the gift shop and nursery, and chat with environmental education organizations about proper recycling habits, water conservation, and environmental stewardship. Plus, kiddos can help paint a themed mural and create "living jewelry."

Earth People Fair Past Event List
PSU's Learning Gardens Laboratory will host all you lovely Earth people for an afternoon of music, food, and workshops in a celebration of "Earth care, people care, and fair share." The fair will also include a plant sale, free raffle tickets, and info on some of Portland's sustainable organizations. All donations will go towards the LGL program, which promotes garden education and sustainability practices that are accessible to all.

Earth Day Night Market Past Event List
Sustainable furniture and art shop Metalwood Salvage is celebrating their favorite holiday with a night market which will include local artists and makers, a community garden start swap, a Thirsty Bird fundraiser for Friends of Trees, and a silent auction with exclusive items benefitting Friends of Tryon Creek. Plus, it wouldn't be a proper night market without plenty of food, beer, and music.

Do your part this Earth Day with this stewardship opportunity at Portland's "living museum of trees." You'll help to maintain the arboretum's tree collection and trail system through varied hands-on projects such as invasive species removal, weeding and mulching, and more. Join "Earth's coolest PR company" Making Earth Cool for this all-day celebration in honor of our precious home. The event, which will include activities, speakers, live music, a "funeral procession for the Earth," a screening of Earth-themed short films, and a dance party, will raise funds for the Sunrise PDX offshoot community organization Youth Vs. ODOT

Rhythm Nation: Earth Night 2022 Past Event List
A nonprofit built by the Portland dance community, Rhythm Nation is celebrating Earth Day "by doing what’s necessary to save it: fighting against corporate influence in our government." The night will begin with phone banking for the progressive U.S. Congress hopeful Jamie McLeod-Skinner, followed by live music from Tony Quattro, PRSN, Barisone, Leeonn and Sara Z. The event is part of a worldwide series of Earth Night events that aims to bring climate awareness to nightlife communities.

The ever-charming pocket of Multnomah Village will celebrate Earth with a full day of art (open galleries, an art sale, and a mural painting), live music, community activities including a clean-up and scavenger hunt, and Earth Day-themed food and drink specials at participating neighborhood businesses.

Earth Day Celebration at the Farm Past Event List
This four-acre farm is throwing their first ever Earth Day celebration with fun activities for all ages. The day will start off on an invigorating note with an Earth Day-themed yoga class surrounded by nature before diving into other festivities like a pop-up by Chug Coffee, an afternoon of eco-friendly vendors, and a DIY crafts experience in the farm barn where you can personalize a grocery tote made from recycled plastic and make mini Earth-shaped wildflower seed bombs.

Forest Park Conservancy is celebrating Earth Day with multiple stewardship opportunities throughout the park on major trails like Wildwood, Leif Erikson, and the Birch trailhead. Proving once again that the youth are our only hope, the Portland Youth Climate Collective (PYCC) will present the 2nd Annual Portland Youth Climate Summit. The youth-led and -centered event will feature presentations on issues such as environmental justice, intersectional environmentalism, food justice, and sustainable urban development in addition to providing a space where young people can spark conversations with climate and environmental justice organizations.

Move for Mother Earth Past Event List
Presented by nonprofit transportation justice organization The Street Trust, the first annual "Move for Mother Earth" is a walk/jog/run starting along Leif Erikson trail in Forest Park. Finishers of the 3.65 mile route will score a custom fanny pack, and the first 25 registrants will also receive a ticket to The Big Float Past Event List . Following the event, movers and shakers are welcome to convene at Great Notion Brewing's Northwest location for a social hour.

Cause Cabaret: Natural Resources Defense Council

These two urban features are quiet workhorses for the environment and in making cities more livable, plus research has shown that the presence of trees along streets provides a "traffic calming effect."

MORE WAYS TO GET INVOLVED

A handful of Portland businesses have partnered with the community organization Grow Portland, which “supports schools and communities by facilitating hands-on garden experiences that foster connections to food, nature and each other.” Portland Nursery will be matching April donations of any amount for up to a total of $1,500. Ecliptic Brewing’s “mothership location” is donating 10% of all sales on April 22. Throughout the entire month, Alberta Co-op is doing a “register round-up,” where shoppers can round up to the nearest dollar to support Grow Portland. Sesame Collective restaurants (Shalom Y’all, Lil Shalom, Mediterranean Exploration Company, and others) will donate a portion of sales throughout Earth week (April 18-22).
