Church of Film: Leila and the Wolves
Lebanese director Heiny Srours's '84 drama follows Leila, a Lebanese woman whose reflections on the women in Lebanese and Palestinian history translate into time travel on screen—Leila meets women living through the Nakba and the Lebanese Civil War. Leila and the Wolves took over seven years to direct, as Srour filmed under "dangerous shooting conditions" and constructed an elaborate fairy tale amid trauma and destruction.
