VISUAL ART

Portland Art Picnic Past Event List
What better time for an art picnic than the end of spring, as the solstice approaches and SAD lamps have long since flicked off? Celebrate (one of) the longest days of the year on Saturday at this recurring picnic, where visitors will find an outdoor gallery and sale featuring over five dozen local creatives slinging paintings, wearables, stickers, and more. If that's not convincing enough, there'll probably be some great dog-watching, too. My suggestion? Snag croissan'wiches and "potato mittens" from Chubby Bunny beforehand, then walk off that overstuffed feeling at the park. LC
(Laurelhurst Park, Laurelhurst, free)

and/or you Past Event List
And/or you is the alias of Portland-based composer, bassist, and producer Andrew Jones. For this special album release concert, Jones will draw together the worlds of "songcraft, EDM, contemporary classical, hip-hop, and jazz" to wring them into a "deeply personal and densely coherent ‘pop’ form." Expect to hear a unique blend of contrasting instruments ranging from his 100-year-old contrabass to virtual synthesizers. Local ambient composers Taranoya and Broken Crow fill out the bill. AV
(Lollipop Shoppe, Buckman, $10-$12)

MULTI-DAY

JUNETEENTH

Don't Shoot Portland x Art x Juneteenth History Past Event List
In collaboration with PNCA, the visionary social justice education organization Don't Shoot PDX will offer a free two-day art and activism workshop in observance of Juneteenth. They'll blend printmaking and zine-making practices to "explore the richness and diversity of Black artistic expression;" participants will come away with crafty new skills, plus increased knowledge on Black artists and civil rights leaders past and present. LC
(PNCA, Pearl District, free, Friday-Saturday)

Juneteenth Oregon Past Event List
Commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans, Oregon's 51st annual Juneteenth celebration is a community event that was first started by Vanport shipyard worker Clara Peoples. Over the two-day festival, celebrants will watch a parade, peruse vendors and local community organizations, and enjoy a lineup of performances. Plus, you'll want to brush up on your steps because the Cupid Shuffler-in-chief, Cupid himself, will headline the festivities. JW
(Lillis-Albina Park, Eliot, free, Saturday-Sunday)

COMEDY

Talk of the Town Past Event List
Look, Portland is great, but there are more than enough reasons that living in the City of Roses might also have you feeling a little glum. Talk of the Town has your back, though. The recurring improv show hits the stage every third weekend of the month with rotating guests sharing what makes Portland great—good art, great food, and hilarious, off-the-cuff conversation. Each guest will inspire a ragtag team of improv experts to create fresh scenes and characters on the spot. (Just don't bring your umbrella—it's gauche.) LC
(Curious Comedy Theater, King, $15, Friday-Saturday)

COMMUNITY

Delta Park Pow Wow and Encampment Past Event List
This annual Portland tradition will return after a pandemic hiatus to once again gather Native American and non-native participants for competitive intertribal dance routines, drumming, and shopping with Native craft vendors. (Don't miss the chance to nosh on ultra-pillowy fry bread, if you haven't already; your life will be forever changed.) The Delta Park pow wow and encampment has been held annually since 1970, but the park, built on the site of the city of Vanport, has a complicated history—learn more about it here. LC
(Delta Park, North Portland, free, Friday-Sunday)

FILM

David Lynch: Oz Connections Past Event List
Thinkpieces be damned—we still don't understand much about the oeuvre of surrealist madman David Lynch. He famously doesn't explain his films, leaving us all in the dark as to their true meanings. But perhaps it's more fun that Lynch's motivations remain a mystery; I'm certainly still learning new things about him. One of those new things is that Lynch is utterly obsessed with The Wizard of Oz—so much so, in fact, that there's a new documentary about his preoccupation with the tale. LYNCH/OZ "re-interpret[s] The Wizard of Oz by way of David Lynch," offering up a new appreciation for the weirdo auteur's symbolism "through the lens of his greatest influence." The doc sounds like just another way to ruminate on, and perhaps complicate, Lynch's own stories, but super fans should still put their butts in seats. Pregame with David Lynch: Oz Connections, which celebrates the release of LYNCH/OZ with additional screenings of the director's ethereal features, including Mulholland Drive,Blue Velvet, and The Elephant Man this weekend. LC
(Cinema 21, Nob Hill, $9-$11)

Discovering del Toro Film Series Past Event List
Presented in conjunction with Guillermo del Toro: Crafting Pinocchio, an 8,000-square-foot show centering the cinema nonconformist's stop-motion process, del Toro's rarely seen flicks and crowd favorites will screen in 35mm. The Guadalajara-born Academy Award winner's distinctive style will be on full display across three weekends; the series continues this week with screenings of Pinocchio, The Devil's Backbone, Blade II, Pan's Labyrinth, The Shape of Water, and Hellboy. LC
(Whitsell Auditorium, South Park Blocks, $10-$12)

Labyrinth Past Event List
It's never a bad time to revisit '86 dark fantasy Labyrinth, which only serves to bolster the theory that David Bowie was a creation pulled straight from Jim Henson's fantastical imagination. Grab a beer and some popcorn in honor of Bowie's cinematic mystique (and Henson's oddball brilliance)—this fresh restoration of the flick brings new dimension to the freaky tale of the Goblin King. (Also, psst: It's Father's Day this weekend. Bring your pops for some nostalgia bonding.) LC
(Hollywood Theatre, Hollywood District, $8-$10, Friday-Sunday)

Past Lives Past Event List
While Past Lives is very much not about cannibalism, it is a film that audiences far and wide have been eating up over its festival run. It tells the story of a decades-long relationship between two childhood friends, Nora (Greta Lee) and Hae Sung (Teo Yoo), who are separated after Nora’s family emigrated from South Korea. It is one of the best films of the year and one of the best debuts in recent memory. MERCURY CONTRIBUTOR CHASE HUTCHINSON
(Hollywood Theatre, Hollywood District, Friday-Sunday)

PERFORMANCE

The Pursuit of Happiness (or the Wacky Lesbian Adventures of Brillo Pad and Hula Hoop) Past Event List
Fuse Theatre Ensemble, a national leader in trans theater representation, will present a new meta-musical featuring characters across gender and sexuality spectrums. (Hint: if you loved American Girl or anything by local playwright Mikki Gillette, you'll dig this.) The Pursuit of Happiness (or the Wacky Lesbian Adventures of Brillo Pad and Hula Hoop) offers up an "absurd vortex" of nuclear bombs, transitioning pressures, and gender dysphoria, all set to a soundtrack of original earworms. The pay-what-ya-can performance was penned by Ernie Lijoi, winner of the Portland Drammy's Best Original Music Award in 2016, so sit back and enjoy the whirlwind of gender fuckery—you're in good hands. LC
(Reed College, Eastmoreland, Pay-what-you-can, Friday-Sunday)

SHOPPING

GeekCraft Expo Past Event List
DIY lovers won't wanna miss this craft market, a self-described "mall for geeks" that claims to compile the "largest curated collection of geeky crafters and makers in the PNW." Seems believable to us—our neck of the woods definitely has its fair share of nerds. (There's even a Northwest nerd podcast!) Local artisans will sling their geeky, never-mass-produced wares, so stop by to snatch up baby Yoda tchotchkes and other giftables for the special poindexters in your life. (Crocheted TARDIS, anyone?) LC
(Oregon Convention Center, Lloyd District, $0-$5, Saturday-Sunday)

Rose City Book and Paper Fair Past Event List
Maps! Rare tomes! Miscellaneous paper ephemera!!!!! Now that we've got your attention, listen up: The Rose City Book & Paper Fair is back with a mountain of unusual goodies from dozens of vendors. You'll find underground zines, quirky vintage photo albums, and antiquarian tomes, plus local haunts like Belmont Books and Revolutions Bookshop on site. Expect to come across a few tome hawkers you may not have heard of, too, like travel- and adventure-focused Timbuktu Books and rare sci-fi purveyors Cross Genre Books. Added bonus—I attended last year, and the people-watching is choice. LC
(Doubletree Hotel, Lloyd District, $5, Friday-Saturday)

VISUAL ART

Jess Ackerman: Always Been the Laughing Boy Past Event List
Jess Ackerman, Portland-based painter of eye-popping tabletops and sparkly flora, presents a new body of work in Always Been the Laughing Boy, the artist's first solo exhibition with Chefas Projects. Inspired by the so-called sad clown paradox—"but doctor, I am Pagliacci," etc.—Ackerman leans into their typical jovial style while lending it a slightly uneasy edge. Take a peek at the bright-yet-thorny composition of their acrylic and gouache painting Sucker for a sneak peek at the show's discreetly anxious approach. LC
(Chefas Projects, Central Eastside, free, Friday-Saturday)

Rimaldas Vikšraitis: At the Edge of the Known World Past Event List
Experimental Lithuanian photographer Rimaldas Vikšraitis takes neither a traditionalist nor a contemporary approach to art-making; instead, he captures realistic, individualized images of modern-day Lithuanian country life with a stark, sometimes grotesque point of view. (Just check out this shot for a better sense of what I mean; trigger warning for animal death.) As both a distant observer and participant in the circumstances of each shot, Vikšraitis cultivates a record of his rural community with a subtle blend of human empathy and ironic tragicomedy. It's difficult to look at, and difficult to look away from. LC
(Blue Sky Gallery, Pearl District, free, Friday-Saturday)

Una Palabra de Lucha Past Event List
Inspired by the longstanding East Coast-based Neo-Latino Collective, this group exhibition compiles works by the collective's artist organizers alongside Portland-based creatives, each of whom explores "the unattainable oneness of Latinity." Installed at Stelo's Park Blocks location, Una Palabra de Lucha (which translates to "a fighting word"—the fighting word, in this case, being "identity") will also include additional programming at Oregon Contemporary. Peep the exhibition on opening weekend for fresh artistic insights from Havana-born painter Nelson Alvarez, Colombian-American sculptor Olga Mercedes Bautista, hyperreal floral artist Manu Torres, and many others. LC
(Stelo, Pearl District, free, Saturday-Sunday; opening)
