GrindWitTryz List
Last week, we reported that the Hawaiian restaurant GrindWitTryz would close at the end of the month. Happily, it seems the business will remain open after all: They've purchased the space of the recently closed Nico's Cantina List and will host a grand opening in February.

CLOSURES

Holler Treats List
Parting is such sweet sorrow: The dessert shop announced via Instagram this week that it will close on January 21, writing, "In the midst of the challenges the pandemic brought to the restaurant industry, opening and sustaining a new business during these times was no small feat. After two and a half years, we are grateful for the memories we’ve shared on our little corner in Sellwood." The business was a spinoff of the fried chicken spot and sports bar Holler, which shuttered last February List .

POP-UPS AND EVENTS

FRIDAY, JANUARY 12

Alcohol-Free Fridays Past Event List
Each Friday in January, the Portland Bottle Shop will host free pop-ups to jumpstart your creativity with booze-free beverages. On January 12, non-alcoholic spirits brand The Pathfinder will join to help shake and stir up some mocktails, while Portland Syrups will offer samples of all of their flavors (like yuzu, passionfruit citrus, and rose cordial) in mini Italian sodas. The following week, on January 19, local business For Bitter For Worse will pay a visit.
The Portland Bottle Shop, 4-6 pm

Oysters & Sake Pairing Past Event List
Oysters and sake are an unexpected but harmonious pairing—the umami flavors of sake complement briny bivalves perfectly. Pop Oysters PDX will shuck some mouth-watering mollusks served with lemon, hot sauce, and white wine vinaigrette, while Namazake Paul Imports will provide a curation of small-batch sake.
Chill N Fill, 5-9 pm

WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 17

OMSI After Dark: CiderFest Past Event List
What if your sixth-grade museum field trip grew up to be the boozy evening of your dreams? Such is the premise behind this geeked-out cider fest presented by OMSI in collaboration with 2 Towns Cider House. Quaff boozy apple-based libations, learn about cidermaking, check out hands-on science demos that would make Bill Nye proud, and traipse through OMSI's featured "Orcas: Our Shared Future" and "Staying Alive: Defenses of the Animal Kingdom" exhibits with no kids around. Local food vendors like Clarklewis, Mudge Fudge, and Sinful Confections will also sling tasty snacks.
Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI), 7-11 pm

Shinnenkai Past Event List
Shinnenkai means "new year gathering" in Japanese and is a celebration often marked by consuming alcohol. Forest Grove-based saké company SakéOne is sponsoring this year's event hosted by the Japan-America Society of Oregon (JASO), so there should be no shortage of sips. Enjoy ozoni (a soup with mochi traditionally eaten during the new year) and mini osechi (New Year's dishes arranged similarly to bento) from local shaved ice purveyor Soen, as well as rolls from sushi cart Yoshi’s. There will also be performances from Kotori Japanese Music and fukubukuro (fortune bags) full of assorted gifts for you to grab on your way out. SHANNON LUBETICH

JANUARY 13-21

Oregon Cider Week Past Event List
Portlanders drink more cider per capita than anywhere else in the world, and it's not hard to see why: Oregon boasts a bevy of prime cideries, pouring apple-based libations that taste like a crisp autumn day in a glass. The nine-day-long Oregon Cider Week event builds on this enthusiasm and coincides with the world's largest cider conference, CiderCon, which is returning to Portland for the first time in nearly 10 years. Expand your palate with parties, tastings, tap takeovers, tours, trivia, education, festivals, flights, food pairings, pop-ups, and other events.

SPECIALS

Cheese and Crack List
What do you get when you cross tiramisu with animal crackers? The answer appears to be Cheese and Crack's special aptly dubbed "tiramizoo," available Monday-Thursday and "sometimes on Friday" while supplies last.
Kerns

Gumba List
Not to invoke the Portlandia "we can pickle that" sketch, but the stereotypes of Portlanders loving their briny snacks does seem to hold true (think the Portland Pickles, the Portland Fermentation Festival Past Event List , or Ice Queen List 's "tickle my pickle" paleta). The latest pickle special to hit the scene is Gumba's new cocktail "I'm a Pickle, Morty," which contains Irish whiskey, La Quintinye dry vermouth, house-made pickle bitters, and of course, a tiny cornichon garnish.

Nico's Ice Cream List and Pip's Original Doughnuts & Chai
Two great tastes that taste great together: Nico's Ice Cream is teaming up with Pip's Original to offer a collaborative special called the "Tropical Reggie Lee," featuring vanilla soft serve blended with Pip's doughnut chunks and topped with Nutella, honey, and coconut flakes. The creation will be available exclusively at Nico's NE Fremont location from 12-9 pm on Saturday.
