The following description comes from the event organizer.

The new butterfly habitat is a sanctuary that plays a critical role in providing a habitat for endangered Monarch Butterflies and other pollinators. The loss of habitats due to human activities is one of the leading causes of the drastic decline in the Monarch Butterfly. The garden is designed primarily with native Oregon plants, which includes Milkweed, the only plant that Monarch caterpillars can eat. Creating new habitats is one of the best ways to help the Monarchs recover. 

The Portland Monarchs are leading this event, and no experience is necessary. All instruction and tools will be provided. During the event, we will continue to remove invasive plants, hand remove weeds, define existing planting areas, mulch, and prepare to plant additional native plants.
