In this '80s-drenched insomniac caper, Jeff Goldblum plays a baggy-eyed depressive who just found out that his wife is cheating on him. With little else to do, he ventures off aimlessly into the Los Angeles twilight and has a run in with a beautiful jewel smuggler (Michelle Pfeiffer) who snags him in her plot to make off with the Shah of Iran’s emeralds. It's the delirious West Coast flip side of Martin Scorsese’s AFTER HOURS, where the city after dark is truly dangerous and the innocent in its web finds he’s unexpectedly at home in the dark. John Landis’s INTO THE NIGHT takes a classic noir story—the middle-class stooge jolted out of his protected but dull existence and plunged into a nightmarish odyssey into the urban underworld—and treats it with appropriate dreamlike illogic and comedic chops.
