Don't Miss
Deep respect to any bands striving to grapple with the daunting legacies of jazz fusion and prog rock this late in the 21st century. Seattle’s Spyn Reset and Spontaneous Rex have applied their phenomenal instrumental dexterity to songs that take you on serpentine thrill rides in odd time signatures and with flamboyant melodies that would make John McLaughlin and Chick Corea prick up their ears. For proof, go directly to Spontaneous Rex’s Bandcamp and play “The Early Adventures of Pro Fresh.” It’s a complex matrix of Miles Davis’s fervid funk, Larry Coryell’s guitar pyrotechnics, Jaco Pastorius’s absurdly nimble bass lines, and spacey, “Dark Star”-like jamming. Bring your longest attention span and a sweat band.
