The Latona Pub Turns 35: Anniversary Celebration August 16th through August 20th
It is hard to imagine that 35 years have passed at the corner of 65th and Latona. During that time, the pub has been the scene of many events and is still very much the social and cultural hub it was designed to be.
As longtime publican Don Youngren once said, “it is all about the beer” and at the Latona from day one we have strived to be a center for the development of the craft beer industry. At the beginning in 1987, there were only half a dozen breweries. Today, there are close to five hundred.
Over those 35 years, the Latona has grown into one of the premier craft beer bars on the West Coast by focusing on delivering the beer to the consumer’s glass the way the brewer intended. To that end, the neighborhood pub on the corner of 65th St. and Latona Avenue pioneered quality assurance standards like short draws from keg to glass, weekly cleaning of lines, regular changing of lines, and a limited number of taps to ensure constant pour through.
The Latona has always encouraged the artistic and creative side of brewing by being a location for the release of new beers. Over the years, it has also been involved with well over one hundred collaborations.
We have worked with brewers to develop the interpretation of styles such as the nitrogenated Rogue Oatmeal Stout, and numerous others from sours to IPAs. These small batches of beer have encouraged brewers to think creatively, often resulting in exciting new brews that take on a life of their own and become a part of the brewery’s core lineup.
The Latona Pub was the scene of the release of the iconic Georgetown’s Manny’s Pale Ale 20 years ago. Along the way, many of the collaboration beers became brewery favorites and the excitement of the “release” is still a part of its legacy.
Despite being a craft beer pioneer, the pub has also developed a reputation for food and music. The Latona has a history of supporting local music, hosting the longest running Friday Night Jazz Happy Hour—30 years and going strong. After Boots, Barrie, and Murray held court for 17 years with their addicting brand of Dixieland jazz, Phil Sparks has carried on the tradition for the last 13 years with his rotating cast of local musicians. Many well-known folk, bluegrass, and blues musicians have also graced the pub’s stage.
The kitchen at the Latona can best be described as “small, yet mighty.” Boasting a menu of elevated pub fare, the pub is immensely proud of its food. The burger stands as one of the best in the city, the salads are meals unto themselves, and the grilled cheese has been hailed several times as one of the best in town. Every ingredient is sourced as locally as possible and is delivered daily to maintain freshness.
We salute the cast of characters that have made the Latona great, including so many amazing employees over the years. The personality and quality of the pub was built by its workers and we could not have made it this far without their dedication. This 35th anniversary is about them and the community of regulars who call the Latona home. This neighborhood pub is a community and it is an essential part of the fabric of the city.
The Latona is proud to have played a part in the development of craft beer in Seattle. We have been dedicated to that end and continue that mission today. Though we are 35 years young, we strive to be relevant in the continuing saga of craft beer.
To that end, we have worked with brewers to brew eight collaborations. They will be released during the week of events for the Latona. There will also be some exciting can and bottle releases as well. The schedule is listed below. We have also selected some favorite charities to work with and hope to raise some funds for these important organizations. Join us as you can for the events of the 35th.
