Island of the Hungry Ghosts
Embarrassingly, I had no idea what Christmas Island was before I stumbled onto this film. It sounds cute and jolly, but it's not. It's been referred to as Australia's Guantánamo; an island filled with refugees, asylum seekers, and detained immigrants. People go in and they don't come out. It’s haunting, and currently the subject of a dramatic political debate in that southernmost continent. Filmmaker Gabrielle Brady has created an arresting, emotional documentary about the island’s effects.
